Microsoft have a growing problem, one that's going to become more apparent as time goes on. That problem is the new free model of OS upgrades adopted by Apple.
As we move further and further away from Moore's Law and the upgrade cycle of hardware slows for consumers, then Microsoft will be ever more bound to making money from OEMs than users upgrading.
Meanwhile over at Cupertino, Apple made the decision to provide it's users OS upgrades for free.
This leaves a stark contrast between Microsoft and Apple. Microsoft charging users to upgrade and Apple giving upgrades away for free.
In most developed economies I've travelled to, if you walk into a cafe you'll see more Macbooks these days than PC laptops.
Now Apple is teaming with IBM to take BYOD to the enterprise level.
I don't know what Microsoft plans for the future, but whatever it is had better be good because slowly and surely Apple is starting to catch up.
