Oh I agree. Generally speaking, one can blame one's self for being any part of a violent situation.

But your experience highlights the original point really well, at that very second, you didn't make a decision, you spontaneously HAD to hit that guy, no options. Only in retrospect do you feel that you had a choice.

At the same time, to expand on the exiting the car and being instantly assaulted scenario, the victim could be trapped by the door due to the perp who is also starting the roundhouse, would you feel OK now if you hit that guy in that situation?
