I personally use brown rice protein powder because I'm a dirty vegan hippie. It's tasteless but has a really horrible consistency.
25 gram serving has 400 kilojoules and 20 grams of protein.

Yep on top of that reason you mentioned (calorie restricted diets), people also live busy lives, protein is a supplement, why do people take vitamins? , same thing. some people are at their jobs or on the way to or back from their work, then they go home, shower, wind down and goto bed. not everybody wants to sit there and count their protein intake every day. its a way of being sure. 150-200g of protein is harder than you think to obtain. A can of tuna has the most protein and its only 30g, not alot of people like cottage cheese and tuna. and even if they did, they'd need to eat how many cans? i bet there are alot of people that goto my gym who aren't getting enoguh protein for their weightlifting lifestyle
how about vegans/vegetarians, also hard to get in enough protein. there are ways, its just a hassle when you live a busy life
