As about winter, so it's very different of where you are. In the continental Russian winter are not depressing at all. They are cold but usually very shiny. Something like that:
Moscow is another case. Winters here are not really cold, they just windy, wet and very gloomy (snow mixed with rain, low grey clouds). Yes, they are very depressive here.
