It works like insurance against litigation costs.
Even in UDRP arbitration a corporate domain owner will use an attorney. Ever if they have a staffed legal department it is added expense.
For a large business the cost is negligible to just pay the registration fees.
They just bulk register their trade names for a lot less than we would pay as individuals.
If you have an EMD with an unregistered trade name you are between a rock and a hard place -- but this was always this way. Now the EMD registrations gTLDs have exploded exponentially. 90% will probably amount to nothing. It is the other 10% that will matter.
