Someone can do way more damage with a stolen debit card than a stolen credit card. A stolen credit card you lose some time in dealing with changing billing accounts and things like that, you do not lose money. A stolen debit card means someone is directly draining your bank account. Sure, in most cases you will get that money back, but it's going to take a bit of time for the bank to get you squared away.

Credit cards also build your credit, which in itself will save you a great deal of money if you ever plan on buying anything of serious price.
