Personally, I'm against long term welfare unless it's for elderly or disabled, but the problem is these people whom are habitual offenders of public assistance usually have kids and it's the kids that suffer. These habitual offenders come in all races and they vote both republican and democrat, despite what the right loves to proclaim that it's just an inner city black issue. You go to many of the southern and western states and they are filled with white people on foot stamps, just like when you go to big cities with large black or Hispanic population which are on them..
It's just another example, where an issues is politicized to use as a wedge between two teams rather than trying to fix the issues.

Long term the West has to do something major about unemployment and low skilled, low paid jobs.
Populations are increasing and good jobs are getting more technical, the old "factory fodder jobs, no longer exist. The people to fill them are increasing. The people at the top won't pay enough taxes to support those at the bottom.
A simmering pot today, will start to boil and then what?
