A lot of voters, vote to keep someone out. They may not like who they vote for, they just know they don't want the other guy.
Would Romney have faired better if he hadn't of been a Mormon, would Obama have faired better if he hadn't of been a Black, will Clinton fair better if she wasn't a woman, would Trump fair better if he didn't keep putting his foot in his mouth? Think of it in terms of rejecting the floating middle of the road voters. The ones who really matter.
Trump will attract a lot of voters, but not as many as he repels to the Democrats.
Bush has the Bush legacy to contend with.
Clinton has only her husband's sex scandal to weather.
Things like this have a huge effect on how some people vote.
