After a couple days of intense research on the subject, I can confidently say that the best way to make a wordpress site into a paid membership site is with AMEMBER PRO.
Amember is not a plugin that you bring into your wordpress, but rather it's a script that you install on your server whereby you bring your WP site "inside it". It's a full one-stop solution with no additional plugins or configurations. You can even create your own affiliate program with it. The best thing is they support almost 100 payment gateway with no extra charge. Luckily mine was on the list.
It's also very inexpensive.
