There have been archaeologists who claim the dating of the pyramids are much older then the time of the great Egyptians. And that they were already built by the time the Egyptians found them.
Even archaeologists who have the same thinking as you argue the exact way they were built. So no you don't really know how they were "built".
I'm not saying Carson is even close to being right. But it is good to keep an open mind (again not saying he is right)
Was it used for tombs? Yes. But to speak like you know everything as fact is completely false.

So why did they not leave them hollow?
Seems to me a man trying to be President would know how to use Google.
Logically one would ask why the Egyptians were worshipping other gods, if it was the Jewish god doing all this great work. And why by the time Joseph appeared, the Egyptians had a long history of building pyramids. Because they believed if the Pharaoh went to the after life, they would follow.
The building of the pyramids is now very established fact. It wasn't slaves, they weren't forced to, they were well cared for and built the pyramids after the harvest had been gathered. All this is available through archeological records. Still Carson probably believes the world was created 6,000 years ago in 7 days. Because a priest said so.
He can only get away with statements like these because of the level of education of his target audience. It's not a question of "keeping an open mind". It's a fact of denying the truth.
