Back in 1998 when a lot of guys started it was the only available option.
When new people came to the industry and wanted to do business they had no choice but to install it also, even though better options were available already.
Even now there are still webmasters that don't use Skype or Telegram or Hangouts but do have ICQ.
But it perfectly describes this industry, people don't like change. That's why their industry has been taken over by smarter people who embrace change. Everyone I work with that has serious traffic is on Skype. The guys that stick with ICQ are probably the same guys that complain about the tubes and that no money can be made in porn anymore. And people like affiliate reps and program owners that have no choice because others are to suborn to change to better alternatives.
