In theory they can select anyone they want. There is a huge risk in that. If Trump heads into the convention with enough delegates to win the nomination and they end up giving the nomination to someone else they risk alienating a huge section of voters who voted for Trump.
There is a lot of talk about this happening, but I would think, as desperate as the republicans are to have anyone but Trump, they have to know stealing it from him and giving it to someone else would hand the election to Hillary.
