Can the GOP really say "Trump won, but we have decided to go with someone else".
More importantly, have they ever done that before in the past?
At this point, I do not see how the Republican party is going to reclaim the White House. If Trump gets the nomination, the polls all say he will loose to Hillary (by eight points, although obviously a lot can change before November). If the GOP does not give Trump the nomination, it would split the party with a large enough percentage voting for Trump no matter what ensuring the Republicans do not win the White House.

The primary elections are assigning delegates to the candidates and it takes a certain number of delegates to win the nomination. However, those delegates are not required to vote for the person that won the election. Technically, they can vote for anyone they want.
In the past there have been brokered conventions where one candidate agrees to give their delegates to another candidate, but that normally would happen if you had a situation where there were two or more candidates left and none of them had reached the magic delegate number.
I believe there are other things they could do including voting to change the rules on how the nomination process takes place. Personally, I think they are just putting these threats out there to try to scare the republican voters into not voting for Trump. I think they hope they are making people think, "I'd vote Trump, but they won't let him have the nomination so I won't bother."
