it was fine at the time because people were needed but if you look back you'll see that immigration from many countries were not allowed/not possible..you largely had people coming form the same ethic and religious backgrounds. and those who did get there that were from different cultures were treated horribly but regardless that was then and this is now. coming to a largely unpopulated area from a highly populated area without any social safety nets is not quite the same thing that is happening today. i'm sure you can see that.
