Trump started his entire campaign by saying what he wanted, going off script, and never using a teleprompter. This worked fine for him early on. Now he needs to settle down, stay on topic, and act presidential. But during a debate there is no teleprompter. Not only will he be off script, and at the same time he will have to answer difficult questions. Trump got away with his way because the Republican field was huge with sixteen people debating at the same time.

Clinton, on the other hand, will be very comfortable with this kind of a debate and she can answer these questions with ease.

You know both Clinton and Trump are drilling on mock debates on a daily basis. It's possible Trump might surprise us. But if Trump does his little routine where he says vague stuff like "People know I will be great" while Clinton is ready to address issues in detail, Trump will just look silly.

I didn't watch the conventions, but I surely will be watching the debates.
To me it won't be an issue of him going off script or not, it will be about his policy stances and plans. Clinton has been planning this and coming up with her policies and positions for years now. Trump has only been doing it a few months and he gives very few detail. He is going to have to say something more than just, "I'll get it done, believe me!" to win the debate. Clinton and Trump are both so polarizing at this point there likely aren't too many people left to convince one way or the other. If Trump comes off looking like he doesn't really have much of a plan and Clinton looks prepared and ready, it will be very bad for Trump.
