Depends on the flavor of socialism. China is a success story if you consider the life most Chinese had had before the Communist Revolution.
Vietnam seems to be working out too.
Both have diverse economies and not single resource based. But they are both market driven Communism allowing limited capitalism within.
I wouldn't want their society's standard of living -- but I am not a peasant or low skilled worker either.
