My dad was with the US Army and was in the Battle of the Bulge.
Of the Ardennes Offensive war stories he recounted to me was how his platoon hunted Nazis in the forest at night. They ambushed the Nazi patrols and my dad cut them in half at the waist with a BAR for sport. They also strung piano wire across the back roads and decapitated Nazi motorcyclists. They were not taking prisoners.
That is what war does to a lot of men.
