I think a large part of it is the media concentrates on the most shocking (true or spun) stories in order to compete for visitors to increase their own exposure and ad revenue.
Lately, Trump has been doing or saying more shocking things than his opponents, so he's in the media a lot. He draws attention.
The media is no longer impartial - they're trying to make money like everything else. Most are biased one way or the other - it helps their bottom line.
