The only aircraft carrier is in such poor shape it had to be freaking towed to Syria.

What century do you live in? Do you really think that there will be Midway-style sea battles in 21st century? Like two aircraft carriers against each other? Why not swordsmen and archers then? Just imagine the US dragoons vs Russian musketeers on horses. What a battle could it be, ah?!
Man, the anti-ship missiles were invented a long time ago. Surprised? One cruise missile is 1000000's times cheaper than an aircraft carrier, but it's much more effective. There will be no Kamikazes or anything like that. It will be as simple, as cheap and as effective as this:
I have no idea why Putin has decided to take the rusty and half-dead Admiral Kuznetsov to Syria. I think the old man has a senility. The aircraft carriers are dinosaurs nowadays - they are just a joke. Nobody will use them in a real war, because they will be sunk in the first minutes of any military conflict.
In fact it will be a bit worse, because according to the Russian military doctrine, the tactical nuke warheads will be used against the enemy aircraft carriers. One small tactical nuke of 500 kilotons exploded about 100-200 meters above the entire battle group will do the trick. E.g. SS-N-19 "Shipwreck" or SS-N-27 "Sizzler". They are cheap, fast and have about 2000-2500 tactical range (can be launched from planes, ships and submarines).
