Actually with smartphones there is less motivation for going to events like this. I am not surprised at all about the lower turnout as the smartphone was not common at all when Obama was elected the first time around.
These days everyone has one so unless you just wanted to get a selfie for your facebook page why deal with the crowds? (Not only that but the rain had been predicted which always brings out less people.)
