The *heathens* have practiced kidnapping, hostage taking and ransoming for 1000's of years. It's a part of their heritage. The was no possible military action and reasonable hope for the hostages' extraction I suppose. So, they paid the ransom money -- culturally that was acceptable I assume.
Had a Saudi Prince and his hunting party had been the hostages would there have been another result -- IDK...
