It's not that simple to make such a decision.

If you have a content worth a lot, you simply can not afford to use Wordpress and get all your content stolen due to some WP flaw. Then, how would you do the payment processing with Wordpress? Do all the adult payment processors you use have a Wordpress plugin? If not, how much will it cost to develop a custom solution? What will happen if the website goes bigger? How would you scale it up with Wordpress? It's not always that straightforward.

Using Wordpress for a member's area is not always an option. I agree you could use it for something non-critical. Depending on your actual needs, you should always think about using a paid solution first, if your budget allows it. Not saying that some paid solutions are better then free, just because you have paid for using them. Most of the time, paid solutions have payment processing already implemented. If not, the author will probably implement it for free. Sometimes it's less expensive to pay upfront, then to start for free and create new expenses that just add up.

With serious project, you need to start seriously.
