Were you aware that since the end of WWII the Federal Senate seats from Alabama have usually been held by Democrats ?

Seat 1 (The seat now held by Jones) from 1946 till 1997 (51 years) was Democrat until Sessions took it. It stayed Republican for the next 21 years until Doug Jones took it.

Seat 2 (Richard Shelby's seat) from 1946 till 1981 (35 years) was Democrat. From 1981 through 1987 (6 years) it went Republican. From 1987 through 1994 (next 6 year period) it was Democrat again and then from 1994 through the present (24 years) it has been Repubican.

So for the 144 cumulative Senate years since 1946 the Senate seats have been held by Democrats for 93 years (65%) and Republicans for 51 years (35%).

So, it is neither surprising or far fetched that a Democratic candidate would win the seat this time around.
