All of the high schools in my area have school resource officers. I have mixed feelings about them. They add extra security (as you say, security that, in a perfect world, shouldn't be needed) but it also makes a lot of the kids feel like they are constantly under the eye of the law. It's sad that we live in a time where kids needs to be under armed protection just to go to school.
