They are projecting. Plus it's a signal that they have no valid argument. Calling everyone they disagree with makes them feel morally superior and in their twisted mind absolves them of having to consider anything anyone else says. Also they feed off of anger and they love to display their anger - it makes them feel tough. In seeing racists around every corner and under every bed they get to feel angry all the time. It's like a high for them and they're addicted to it.
