That's because white people in the South could not (and cannot) get over the fact that they lost a war fought over them owning other people. Their pride will not let them admit it.
Plus, they overcompensate because these "manly men of the South" come from a bunch of girl's named States like 'Carolina', 'Georgia', 'Florida' and 'Virginia' and call their fathers 'Daddy'. So they own guns, drive cars in circles (NASCAR) and act like THEY are the "real tough Americans". There's a lot of good to say about the South but this aspect of it - misplaced Southern pride - is dead wrong.
