That is very possible, however, I think if the polls show him down by 20 points and his approval rating has fallen way down I could see him wanting to save face so he could say something like, "I'm stepping down because I no longer want to put my family through it." He could allow himself to go out on his terms. This also allows him to blame everyone else for his troubles. If he gets his ass kicked in an election, then it isn't just the evil liberals, it's the American People who are turning their backs on him and that would make him look even worse.
Still, one thing we can know for certain about Trump is that there is no real way of knowing what he might do.
