My first read of this was racism. Then I wondered why he didn’t show his fob? I get it, he felt he shouldn’t have to do so. She didn’t recognize him as a tenant and was concerned.

Then after everyone calls her a racist, we find out her husband is black.

I’m torn between racism and stranger danger . She never referred to his race. He never said he was a tenant. She followed him out of concern about a stranger in the building. He was insulted but could have handled it better.

She loses her job over her dealing with the situation the wrong way. I’m not sure that’s the right move. This had nothing to do with her job.

I think a course in stranger management is best. Teach her what to say, i.e. “I don’t recognize your face as a tenant. I’m concerned about safety. May I please have your apartment number or watch you enter with a key? I’m sorry to do this but it’s best for all. In the USA a neighbor shot and killed her neighbor as she didn’t know him. She entered the wrong apartment and didn’t recognize him and stupidly murdered him. I’m just ensuring you’re not killed and I don’t mean to insult you.”

Sure, a shorter version at first, but explain yourself.

Her black husband was a surprise. Doesn’t mean she’s not a racist though.
