I don't think these people are using their kids as pawns, they are trying to get a better life for them and those kids. They can't just leave them behind.

The border patrol agents say that the majority of the kids are being used to gain entry. Some are even being brought in by mules. Basically we have no idea if these kids are even with their real parents or not.
Anyway, best thing is to stop incentivizing them to come here in the first place.
Having a lot of crime at home is not grounds for "asylum". Hell, they aren't gonna find it much better in big cities here in the U.S. when they have no money, can't speak the language and end up in the worst part of town.
"Asylum" was something that I used to hear about pertaining to Soviet dissidents. It's supposed to be something you seek because the govt. of the country you live in is trying to kill you.
Just send them all back. End of problem.
