A product of Unilever, Lynx is the name used in the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. The same product Lynx is known as Axe in other countries. The company has given the product different names so as to avoid the embarrassment that the name creates in different regions. For the British, “lynx” can mean “a big cat,” but it could be a swearing word in some other country.
Unilever launched Axe in 1983 in France. Soon after the success of the product in France, it was marketed in other European countries in which it was also widely accepted. In the U.K. and Ireland, the name of “Axe” could not be used because of some trademark problem ,and so they gave the product the name Lynx. It was in 1985 that Lynx was introduced in the U.K.
