I was watching this movie at the Soviet time because there was not a big choice of movies on VHS at all - we were watching everything. I really loved Star Wars (the original trilogy) and Rambo the First Blood. Even A Nightmare on Elm Street was cool at that time. As I said - I was a Soviet boy from a country where watching these movies was officially a crime. We were watching just everything we could get (when you do something illegal, you are cool) and yes, the Top Gun was like... girls should love it.
