It takes more serious analysis to figure it out. You need to know your traffic and conversion ratios.
My opinion is that the best way is to be honest which means to charge by real clicks sent. Then, they need to make money and earn so if you are selling you need to do it just as you are doing for yourself. This means all those small things as having good relevant banners, measuring CTR, placing them on related pages (sites) suitable for advertiser's niche, etc.
Of course, when you do it this way, the amount of traffic delivered will be smaller than just spamming with a banner all around but conversions will be much better and stable. Otherwise, advertisers won't probably come back if they don't have use from the traffic you are sending.
Also, be aware that most of the people are clueless and they will ALWAYS choose the amount of traffic instead of getting quality one in lower volume.
In the end, if you have a quality site and traffic, you don't need to sell. I sell sometimes as a bonus quick money but long term, it is the best option to keep it for yourself, especially if you are seriously working on quality SE traffic.
