I've been a guest on the tech side of SXSW and most people seemed pretty great at math, so this is a surprise. I know the city requested the cancellation, but I heard that was partly an insurance requirement.
Seriously, though, normally, if 300 people in the US have something happen to them and like 10% of those have a really bad time and a handful even die ... it is a tragedy for those involved, but it is not 24/7 hysterical news and cancellation of events people wait all year for.
The SXSW cancellation is a really big deal for a lot of the musicians and filmmakers involved with those parts of the event.
