Yeah I see what you're saying and I'd agree that masks were not meant to stop the whole pandemic. So people who claim what you wrote above, that people still got sick don't really understand the issue.
What I'm saying is that if masks worked we should be able to see "something" that we could measure in some manner to give us an indication that they work to 'some degree.' And we're not seeing that.
Places (many of them) that had masks mandates implemented suddenly had spikes in cases. Others had no change whatsoever. Then some, like the Philippines who wore masks religiously or risked being shot in the street (slight exaggeration but you get what I mean), had few cases and then suddenly saw huge spikes for no reason.
In short there are no indicators that show that when masks are mandated that we see any meaningful difference in case numbers.
Most cases are spread in homes or big home parties, not at the grocery store or restaurant etc...
