What I experienced is if you keep trying to log in after a while the site don't ask for phone verification only captcha verification and I could just simply log in after a few attempts and change my number to a new one without any problem... it's like phone verification is not required all the time but just randomly for some login attempts... but this was 2-3 months ago I don't know what they changed since then, it might ask for verification every single time now

This is similar to what I suggested, but I think they tightened that up. At least people on Reddit said that lol. But, this did used to work.
