Sure they work if you have the right one and use it correct. But that is not the case most of the time and as you said the trash produced is immense.
In the end you can do anything if you are willing to put enough effort in it. But normally people benchmark anticipated outcome against input and then decide if its worth it. That evaluation seemingly has not been applied to covid and masks.
