Colin it's pretty simple to jump into a computer straight from the camera. You still have the camera you're set to go it's just time consuming.
Or just search digitized Mini DV tapes. It's not complex
Do you intend to crop the tapes when you upsize to recreate 16 by 9?
How is the audio?
