Good question. Nick's new PHP V4 was really good. There is nothing really comparable.
I would guess that current WP installs will last 6+ months before something goes wrong. The PHP versions should last longer as the environment can be controlled more completely.
I can't believe that with the talents of GFY we can't figure out what happened. For all we know he is lying intubated in a Hospital somewhere
