Being the only one in this thread that actually LIVES in New York (Manhattan) I can give you a proper answer:
First, no roommates? OK then you are looking at living in a studio outside Manhattan. Like far, far away in the Bronx or Brooklyn or Queens (or, heaven help you, Staten Island with all the aliens).
But even then your chances are slim. Most studios are going for $2500-$3000 now. The average (average!) for a one bedroom in Manhattan is $4700.
So unless you find a sweet sublet deal (possible) or a rent-controlled apartment (doubtful) or a shady building manager willing to take $5-20k to "get you in" (possible but not recommended) the answer is basically "no".
No, you cannot live in New York alone for $1000.
