All the shit from the people in Pattaya ends up in the sea, without filtering.
On the beach you see rats as big as cats who are feeding from the food stands.
People who want to swim indeed go to the small island during the day.
If you want to swim, better go to an island. But all depends what you want during your trip.
I went many times to Koh Chang and from there to Cambodia.
