The problem has been fixed by Mojo Host!
Thanks to everyone who replied and tested to see if they could view the sites. It's really much appreciated and was a big help. Mojo Host fixed the problem quite quickly. They were able to replicate the problem using the specific configuration of Opera+built-in VPN. On the server they restarted the Apache web service and that fixed the problem. They told me that it was a rare problem. It was just affecting some members in the UK within a small IP range.
The Apache is being reloaded every night as part of the log rotation on the server. They think it might be that some module silently failed during the reload. But it's a rare problem so most likely won't happen again. If it does it will be an easy fix.
