The tech companies lobbied government for ID verification
Social media - search engines - Gmail - Microsoft- porn sites *want* ID verification and they're pressuring governments to enforce it. It's a relationship in which the government's role is to pretend to be the bad guys. These corporations have the power to stop it, but they play along while pretending to resist.
So get it straight. This isn’t about protecting kids. If it were, they would've acted 15+ years ago. Instead Gen Z and many Millennials grew up exposed to far worse content than porn.
Here's some guesses why they want it
Bots probably out number real people.
India and 3rd world nations run non-stop scams, creating millions of fake accounts and profiles in the process.
Monetization of content piracy. EG: Videos on youtube get hacked up and recycled on TikTok.
Content creators are both problematic and inconsistent.
Advertising conversion rates aren't as good as they use to be.
