Constitutionally the people do not have the power to elect the president by their vote. Only the states do which is what the function of the electoral college is.
The members of the electoral college are expected but not legally required to follow the vote of the people.
The founders did this back in the 1700's because they felt the general populace did not have the knowledge to know who would be best in the role of president and felt this method would best if run by politically informed people.
