Great combo. SOAD rocked the house - set went on a bit too long though as many of their songs follow the same pattern (slow, moody interludes to heavy thrash and their totally fucked up vocals throughout). It's Crazy Armenian Metal.
They're totally unique, I'll give 'em that.
The Mars Volta is one of my favorite bands - they rock out with their cocks out! I always wondered how they could pull that shit off live and they have 8 members for live shows! They even have a sax player / flautist who was rocking the hall Jethro Tull-style.
They can improvise jam all night and it's always tight and works, which is impressive (esp. for an 8 piece).
