I was about 15-16, still living on the Big island of Hawaii. Now, people on the Hilo side HATE white people. I really mean it.

My mom and I lived in a house which was sort of behind another house off of the street. If you were driving in from the street, you basically saw a small road, with two speed bumps, leading toward our and our neighbors place.

Right next to this small road, in front of our place, was another house. This one filled with "locals". Don't want to single out Hawaiians here, because it was hardly just Hawaiians who hated white people on the Big Island, but in this case the people were.

Anyways, for a while, they had been riding some kind of go-cart race car back and forth on our driveway. It was annoying, but we let it slide for about a month. We (mom and I) witnessed a kid about maybe 6 years old riding this thing, breaking turns, and riding back without an adult around, and at that point, we were afraid of having a lawsuit if that kid got hurt on our property.

We put up "No trespassing" signs on the grass which bordered our driveway. Figured if we had these, at least we could argue something in court if one of their kids killed themselves on our property.

Of course this didn't do anything to stop anything really. Finally the novelty of this go-cart wore off, and it wasn't driven as often. The kids who lived in that house in front of us, and their friends, just started riding their bikes all the time on the driveway, up to, and including our garage.

The kids had also found it entertaining to turn our 'no trespassing' signs around toward our house, whenever they felt like riding their bikes through our driveway/garage.

I made the mistake once of yelling at the kids one day to cut it out (more like, "get the fuck out of our garage" actually), while they were riding their bikes around in our garage, making "haolie" racist comments at us. We were heading out, and I figured from the way they were acting, they were just going to go through our stuff. Pretty much the reason I had said anything.

Big mistake.

Man, the father of those kids heard me, and came running over, and practically jumped me, he was shaking he was so mad. He went off screaming about, "Fucking Haolies! Fucking living on MY LAND, HAWAIIAN LAND" etc. etc.. "Haolies" is local slang for "white" or in actuality, "******" basically. It's a racial slur against white people.

The guy finally cooled off after about 15-20 mins, and walked away. I was shocked as hell, I was just a kid, and this guy was a 30-35 year old adult freaking out on me.

That night, they screamed out racial slurs to my mom and I all night. Yelling like crazy. The next day, they had put up a sign they made on their lawn which said, "Fuck you Haolies, GO HOME". Besides that, the most they did was glare and shout out the occasional slur whenever we drove in and out of our driveway. Of course, that was the only entryway for us to get to our house, so it was quite often.

I was on home schooling at this point, from putting up with the same racist crap at schools. Kinda made me get a little nutty. Mom ended up calling the police, and when the officer came by, I made a bunch of threats that he better do something about this problem, or I sure as hell would. I went a little freaky on him (the cop). Stupid immature little kid thing to say, but I meant it.

He talked to our neighbors, and they took down the sign, and stopped harassing us mostly. Still uncomfortable to live next to that kind of crap, but we just had to bite the bullet.

Ahh, Hawaii sucks. Still, if you are white, it really gives you a view on racism first-hand. I practically want to shoot someone when they say, "******" or "wet back" with hate in their voice now that I'm on the mainland.

Still... I wish people would realize that racism isn't just limited to their own race. It seems everyone feels singled out, when it really isn't that way at all, every race has it's share of fucking racist morons.

Ugh -- I'm moving to Oahu next month -- please tell me it's not like that there ;)
