oh shit, this is huge, City of Troutdale's lapse in domain payment lets Internet site become porn link

TROUTDALE (AP) - The city of Troutdale touts itself as the gateway to the Columbia River Gorge.

But when Internet users visit the hahaha8220;historic Troutdalehahaha8221; Web site, they discover a gateway to hahaha8220;infinite porn.hahaha8221;

A Web site operator - apparently based in the Czech Republic - took over the lapsed Internet domain name of the Troutdale site and turned it into a fee-based porn access portal.

So instead of learning about the exploits of Troutdale founder Capt. John Harlow, visitors can view the X-rated exploits of everyone from hahaha8220;sluttyhahaha8221; young amateurs to hahaha8220;nastyhahaha8221; grandmothers.

Mike Goss, who created the original Web site to coincide with a Troutdale art festival in 2005, is not pleased with the new content.

hahaha8220;I've spent most of the day trying to clean up the mess of a slimy smut peddler in the Czech Republic,hahaha8221; Goss told The Oregonian newspaper.

Web site operators pay an annual fee for domain names. Goss did not renew the name when it expired at the end of March, allowing it to be claimed by anyone willing to pay the fee.

The same thing happened to Web sites operated by the Tualatin Valley Firefighters Union in 2002 and to the Forest Grove Chamber of Commerce in 2003.

Goss suspects porn site operators buy such sites in the hope that some people who stumble across it will become paying customers. A dozen other sites had links to the Troutdale site, providing a potential customer base, Goss said.

The original site had links to local artists, restaurants and art galleries. Goss spent most of Wednesday warning local businesses to delete the link to the former historic Troutdale site. He said he won't visit his old site.

hahaha8220;Although I don't own that site anymore, it's being misused,hahaha8221; he said. hahaha8220;My wish is that (the operator) goes bankrupt and his personal server explodes.hahaha8221;
