I have used Zabbix quite a bit and it can be configured to do this kind of monitoring. There are web monitoring services such as pingdom as well which you can use, but no where near as robust.

I use Pingdom, they monitor your site, send you e-mails/texts whenever your site goes down, reports back to you daily about your downtimes, there's a free and premium version. You should really check it out, a great tool

Been using http://www.uptimerobot.com/ for a while now.
It will tell you how long your sites have been down, the percentage up time and you can get instant Email alerts when one of your URL is down, The Free version allows up to 50 URL's. Super easy to use, hope that Helps |

Nice, but isnt 288 times a day not a bit overkill ? Will those checks visible for any stats program ? If yes, it will screw some data imo. |

make sure , to host this script on mission critical server/cloud and not on your production server.
so if the production server goes down, monitoring script wont go down with it..

Munin is great. The http_loadtime plugin will monitor this for you and alert you when the site is loading slowly. Everything in munin is really easy to configure and will email you when "warning" or "critical" limits have been reached, from disk I/O, space, mysql, apache, anything.
Very simple to setup

i use uptimerobot.com too, and works fine for me. Very helpful, because i realized too late when site was down, before using the script.
