What's better Cable or Fios??

I am looking at triple play packages from both Cablevision and Verizon Fio's what is better?

You get Cable TV, Internet, and phone, for a deep discount for 2 years.

Currently have, Cable TV and Internet and Verizon for the phone.

My biggest concern is TV reception and fast internet...

Good luck with more replies to help you choose what's better. I chose Rogers and I got a 6-months-free deal with 3-year contract. Additional discounts also apply.

Depends on the specs. What speeds are each offering? Traditionally cable tends to vary more. Usually between 60% - 90% of the "up to" speed in actual use on average. I'd go with FIOS if the two are comparable speeds (take about 75% of cable visions "up to" speed). The upload might vary a lot as well. Check that.

Fios has a prety bad reputation for overbilling its customers and tacking on seemingly arbitrary charges.

Seems they took a page from the Brograms playbook about cross sales and card banging.

I have cable at my NJ house and FIOS in PA ... same really at the end of it all. Both are Broadband .. Both are decent speeds ... TV is decent with the selections. Same TV @ each house ( Samsung LED 46's ) ...

Only difference are the routers. FIOS has a wireless router standard ... Cable I had to place a Linksys N series router for wireless on the house.

I used to have Comcast for my TV and internet. When Verizon ViOS was installed in my area, I checked it out immediately. Verizon offered me better prices for more TV channels, and higher internet speeds. So I switched almost 2 years ago, not a single complaint about Verizon's service.

Given the choice between the two, I'd take Verizon FiOS any day.

Oh, and to address your concerns...TV reception is great. My HD channels look incredible. Shows like Survivor (when they cut to shots of nature) look phenominal.

As for internet speeds, my only complaint is when my computer decides to be a piece of shit and freeze, but that has nothing to do with the FiOS.

Overall, the only gripe I have with Verizon are that their HD DVR boxes are like $16/month, where I remember Comcast's being like $9. But whatever...

whatever you choose, make sure you are clear on how much bandwidth you can use and what the overages are.

Up here Bell recently increased their overage charge to $60, on top of what you are already paying.

When I was living in Sacramento, we had a 25 megabit fiber connection. I got 4,000kbps uploads to my server.

Now I'm in the Bay Area, and everything here sucks complete ass.

FiOS hands down, you get closer to the advertised speed and are less likely to pick up electromagnetic interference since it's fiber optic to your premises.

Any other Verizon product I'd advise against, except FiOS internet and TV.

I will never trade my FiOS unless I am forced to.

I've never had a single problem that I can recall.

I love the upload speed because of the industry I am in.

FIOS is great, cable doesnt even come close...
hd picture quality is superior
up/down speeds are just rediculous
only problem i had is the wireless router verizon supplies which you have to use, i had difficulties using my airportextreme streaming audio system. you could probably add a secondary network using your own router.

So Fio's is leading here so far...

I might ask the super in my new apt what the feedback of the complex is regarding the 2.
I did ask Verizon if there is any charge for canceling service and they said no...the Cable TV commercials say otherwise...but maybe are just creating bad pr for Verizon in them.

I appreciate the opinions...

I got that letter, too. Crazy. I signed up with Sympatico in 1999 or 2000 (so long ago I can't remember) and the asshats have been dicking with me ever since.

I made a post here asking for ISP's in Toronto, but it appears that Bell and Rogers are it. I would ditch these incompetant assholes in a second if I had a choice.

Ya, they are shit. I am lucky though, I have an old account from back when they had unlimited bandwidth so I can still use as much as I want and pay no overages.

I suspect they will soon put that to an end though. I think it's just slipped by them somehow.
