Is it against copyright laws to run song lyrics site ?
Anybody knows if this true and have there been any legal battles over this issue?

There is no point to start a new lyrics site now.

Depends on how you use it. It would appear to qualify as a "work of authorship" and thus be entitled to copyright protection. However, you could probably make some "fair use" arguments if you are simply publishing it for non-commercial reasons.

I noticed like 90% of them are scraped or run by the same company too, they have the exact same typos, etc.

Almost certain it is illegal as the writer owns the words. No different than a book.

Never too late to suck easy traffic from the search engines with something like this. A constant supply of new content and searches to compete for. You could easily enough auto-generate a gigantic back library of lyrics, and setup the site to auto-update in the future. You may not ever become the net's biggest and baddest lyrics site, but you can certainly suckle your fair share of music traffic if you're looking to push ringtones or some shit. You don't have to make things hard on yourself with a project like this.

probably not legal, but make a fake submit page, put DMCA complaint link on the bottom of every page and you are good to go
that's what tube sites have been doing for years...

He didn't ask me if it was a good business model lol.
As I said, the only way you can do this is for fair use. However, one could take a "tube" approach, i.e., rely on user submitted lyrics, post a DMCA, and issue take downs to try to avoid liability. I personally think you could still get blasted, as the owner is obviously soliciting copyrightable material, but it is better than nothing. Also, what constitutes "commercialization" is kinda gray, so one may be able to publish on fair use grounds, find an interesting way to monetize, and argue that the monetization does not rise to the level of commercializing the copyrightable work. |
