How come there are no hybrid desktop hard drives?

Seems like an obvious next step, take 1TB hard drive, tag on 8GB flash memory cache on it (worth $10), price it at $99 and it would sell like hot cakes... There is that seagate momentus xt drive, but since it's a laptop drive both the capacity and performance are crap...

what am I missing? Why aren't there any manufacturers selling hybrid desktop drives?

Why continue improving platter drives when the full push will be for SSD?

1+TB SSD drives at affordable prices are still years away and in some applications platter drives actually outperform SSDs... plus it's not like adding some SSD cache to a platter drive would be some engineering breakthrough, it seems like a trivial task...

trivial vs profitable... adding a cache to current platters would shy people away from getting "newer, better, faster, bigger breasted" ssd drives.

Laptops generally cold boot/sleep/wake more than desktops so more benefit to hybrids. And desktops you have space to do separate SSD+storage drives anyway.

.. not to say a hybrid desktop drive wouldn't sell well

The only thing keeping me from SSD drives are the size. I can't get by unless a drive is at least 1TB. I've got thousands of animation frames to render.

A small SSD for the OS is another story.

They do but only for laptops, I think in general the size of hard drives will go to 2 1/2 so they are not bothering making them in 3 1/2

there are hybrid drives, the Momentus XT model from Seagate comes with 4GB of SLC NAND to cache data. But max capacity right now is 500GB from seagate

If you check the news there has been TONS of issues with the hybrid drives crapping out waaaaay too fast. I think they are still tweaking the tech to be 100% honest. SSD is nice, but a total waste on rigs.

SSDs are nice for sys and core files and apps... but I still find myself relying much more on my raids. Space + speed + constant swapping...
